Maha Mrityunjay Stotra: Mantra that conquers death

Maha Mrityunjay Stotra: Mantra that conquers death

Om Namah Shivay

It is worth thinking how a stotra or mantra dedicated to Shiva, the God of destruction, is about conquering death. The Maha Mrityunjaya stotra is just four lines in all, but considered to be a very powerful mantra that helps ward off death...

Mantra That Evokes Shiva's Image

The Maha Mrityunjay Stotra is also known by the name Rudra Mantra, referring to his angry persona. It is known by the name Triambakam Mantra, literally the God with three eyes. It is also known as Mrita Sanjivini Mantra because of its life-restoring aspect, as experienced by sage Shukracharya, who was revived by this mantra after a period of severe austerities.

Mantra For Meditation

The great mantra is found in the Rig Veda. In fact, many regard the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra as the very essence of the Veda. Along with Gayatri Mantra, the Maha Mrityunjay Mantra is foremost among mantras used for meditation practice. The verse also recurs in the Yajurveda and the Atharvaveda.

The Words Of The Mantra

Om! Triyambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam
 Urvaruka miva Bandhanat Mrityormukshiya Maamritat.

Meaning Of The Mantra

Om! O three-eyed one, we worship and adore you. You are the fragrance of life, who nourishes us, restores us, and causes us to thrive. As the stem of the cucumber weakens over time, as does the gourd if freed from vine, so free us from attachment and death, and please grant us the boon of immortality.

Conquers Much More Than Death

Although Maha Mrityunjaya Stotra is better known as the mantra for conquering death, it also comes as a reminder to us for purifying our karmas, thus leading to overall mental, emotional and physical health. Thus, it also doubles up as a moksha mantra, which bestows one with longevity and immortality.
